How to pick a rap name

  • Make it searchable. A name that’s also an everyday word, like “Smoke” or “Cash”, is almost impossible to find on Google or Spotify. Add a twist or a second word.
  • Use your story. Your real name, a nickname, where you’re from or something people already call you makes a name feel like yours. Choose “From my name” above to build on it.
  • Watch the prefixes. Lil, Young and Big names are everywhere. If you use one, the rest of the name has to do the work.
  • Try it as a tag. If it sounds good shouted in an ad-lib or at the start of a beat, that’s a good sign.
  • Check it’s free. Look for other rappers with the name before you print it on anything.

How to check if a rap name is taken

The generator does the first checks for you. To be sure about a name you like:

  1. Streaming services. The generator looks for an artist with exactly that name on Apple Music. Search Spotify, YouTube Music, SoundCloud and Bandcamp too, since an artist on one isn’t always on the others.
  2. Social handles. The Instagram, TikTok and YouTube links under each name open the matching profile. If the page says it doesn’t exist, the handle is free.
  3. Website. The generator checks whether the .com is registered. If it’s gone, a .band, .music or “yournamemusic.com” address works too.
  4. Trademarks. Search the USPTO trademark search in the US, the UK trade mark search in the UK, or TMview for the EU and other countries. If someone has registered the name for music or entertainment, choose another.

This is a practical checklist, not legal advice. For a name you plan to invest in, a trademark lawyer can run a full clearance search.

Common questions

Should I rap under my real name?

You can, and plenty of artists do. A rap name helps if your real name is very common, hard to spell or already used by another artist, or if you want to keep your music separate from the rest of your life.

Can I change my rap name later?

Yes, but you’ll have to rebuild recognition, so it’s worth getting right early. Your distributor can usually ask Spotify and Apple Music to rename your existing artist profile, so your streams and followers stay with you.

How does the Apple Music check work?

For each name, we search Apple Music for an artist with exactly that name, ignoring capitals, punctuation and a leading “The”. A green tick means there’s no exact match. It’s a fast first check, not a guarantee, so search Spotify and the other services too before you commit.

Is the .com check accurate?

It asks the official .com registry whether the domain is registered. “Available” means nobody owns it right now, so register it soon if you like the name.

Is the rapper name generator free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up and no charge. Tap the star on any name to add it to your shortlist, which is kept in your own browser.
