How to pick a DJ name

  • Make it work on a flyer. Short names stay readable in small type and in capitals on a crowded line-up.
  • Decide on “DJ”. It tells people what you do, but producers who release music often drop it.
  • Fit your sound. A name that suits a techno warehouse might not suit a house pool party. Let your genre guide it.
  • Keep it searchable. A single everyday word is hard to find. Add a twist or a second word.
  • Check the DJ platforms. Search SoundCloud, Mixcloud, Beatport and Resident Advisor as well as the streaming services.

How to check if a DJ name is taken

The generator does the first checks for you. To be sure about a name you like:

  1. Streaming services. The generator looks for an artist with exactly that name on Apple Music. Search Spotify, YouTube Music, SoundCloud and Bandcamp too, since an artist on one isn’t always on the others.
  2. Social handles. The Instagram, TikTok and YouTube links under each name open the matching profile. If the page says it doesn’t exist, the handle is free.
  3. Website. The generator checks whether the .com is registered. If it’s gone, a .band, .music or “yournamemusic.com” address works too.
  4. Trademarks. Search the USPTO trademark search in the US, the UK trade mark search in the UK, or TMview for the EU and other countries. If someone has registered the name for music or entertainment, choose another.

This is a practical checklist, not legal advice. For a name you plan to invest in, a trademark lawyer can run a full clearance search.

Common questions

Should my DJ name start with “DJ”?

Only if you like how it sounds. It’s clear on a line-up, but many DJs who also produce drop it so the same name works for their releases.

Can I use the same name to DJ and produce?

Yes, and most people do. One name keeps your gigs, mixes and releases connected, so fans can follow all of it.

How does the Apple Music check work?

For each name, we search Apple Music for an artist with exactly that name, ignoring capitals, punctuation and a leading “The”. A green tick means there’s no exact match. It’s a fast first check, not a guarantee, so search Spotify and the other services too before you commit.

Is the .com check accurate?

It asks the official .com registry whether the domain is registered. “Available” means nobody owns it right now, so register it soon if you like the name.

Is the DJ name generator free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up and no charge. Tap the star on any name to add it to your shortlist, which is kept in your own browser.
