How to choose a band name

  • Say it out loud. If someone can’t spell it after hearing it once, they won’t find you on Spotify.
  • Make sure it’s yours. If another band already uses the name, especially in your genre, you’ll share search results with them and could be asked to change it later.
  • Get the handles. Matching Instagram, TikTok and YouTube handles make you easy to find and tag. If the exact handle is gone, adding “band” or “music” is a common fix.
  • Think long term. A name that suits your first EP should still suit your third album. Broad usually beats too specific.
  • Go easy on tricks. Odd spellings, numbers and symbols can date quickly and make you harder to search for.

How to check if a band name is taken

The generator does the first checks for you. To be sure about a name you like:

  1. Streaming services. The generator looks for an artist with exactly that name on Apple Music. Search Spotify, YouTube Music, SoundCloud and Bandcamp too, since an artist on one isn’t always on the others.
  2. Social handles. The Instagram, TikTok and YouTube links under each name open the matching profile. If the page says it doesn’t exist, the handle is free.
  3. Website. The generator checks whether the .com is registered. If it’s gone, a .band, .music or “yournamemusic.com” address works too.
  4. Trademarks. Search the USPTO trademark search in the US, the UK trade mark search in the UK, or TMview for the EU and other countries. If someone has registered the name for music or entertainment, choose another.

This is a practical checklist, not legal advice. For a name you plan to invest in, a trademark lawyer can run a full clearance search.

Common questions

Can two bands have the same name?

Streaming services don’t stop it, but it splits your listeners and search results. If it comes to a dispute, the band that used the name first, or registered it as a trademark, usually has the stronger claim. It’s far easier to pick a name nobody else is using.

Should I trademark my band name?

Not on day one. Once you’re selling music, merch or tickets under the name, registering it is worth considering: through the USPTO in the US or the Intellectual Property Office in the UK. Registration covers specific classes of goods and services, so recordings and live shows may need separate classes.

How does the Apple Music check work?

For each name, we search Apple Music for an artist with exactly that name, ignoring capitals, punctuation and a leading “The”. A green tick means there’s no exact match. It’s a fast first check, not a guarantee, so search Spotify and the other services too before you commit.

Is the .com check accurate?

It asks the official .com registry whether the domain is registered. “Available” means nobody owns it right now, so register it soon if you like the name.

Is the band name generator free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up and no charge. Tap the star on any name to add it to your shortlist, which is kept in your own browser.
