Your names will appear here. Each one is checked against Apple Music and .com domains, with quick links to check Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Spotify.

How to choose a stage name

  • One word or two? One-word names are memorable but harder to find in search. A first name and surname feels personal and is easier to search for.
  • Start from your real name. Change the spelling, use your middle name or initials, or pair your first name with a surname that suits your sound.
  • See it written down. Picture it on a poster, a playlist and a Spotify search. Short names read better at small sizes.
  • Make sure it’s free. Check for other artists using it, especially in your genre, before you release anything.

How to check if a stage name is taken

The generator does the first checks for you. To be sure about a name you like:

  1. Streaming services. The generator looks for an artist with exactly that name on Apple Music. Search Spotify, YouTube Music, SoundCloud and Bandcamp too, since an artist on one isn’t always on the others.
  2. Social handles. The Instagram, TikTok and YouTube links under each name open the matching profile. If the page says it doesn’t exist, the handle is free.
  3. Website. The generator checks whether the .com is registered. If it’s gone, a .band, .music or “yournamemusic.com” address works too.
  4. Trademarks. Search the USPTO trademark search in the US, the UK trade mark search in the UK, or TMview for the EU and other countries. If someone has registered the name for music or entertainment, choose another.

This is a practical checklist, not legal advice. For a name you plan to invest in, a trademark lawyer can run a full clearance search.

Before you upload anything, see what it will cost. Our music distribution calculator compares 12 distributors on how often you release and how much you earn, from free plans that take a cut of your royalties to yearly subscriptions.

Common questions

Do I need a stage name?

No. Plenty of artists release under their own name. A stage name helps if your real name is very common, hard to spell or already used by another artist.

Do I have to register a stage name?

In the US and the UK you can perform and release music under a stage name without registering it anywhere. Contracts and payments still use your legal name, so your distributor will ask for both.

How does the Apple Music check work?

For each name, we search Apple Music for an artist with exactly that name, ignoring capitals, punctuation and a leading “The”. A green tick means there’s no exact match. It’s a fast first check, not a guarantee, so search Spotify and the other services too before you commit.

Is the .com check accurate?

It asks the official .com registry whether the domain is registered. “Available” means nobody owns it right now, so register it soon if you like the name.

Is the stage name generator free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up and no charge. Tap the star on any name to add it to your shortlist, which is kept in your own browser.
