Royalty split calculator for bands, writers and producers

This royalty split calculator shows what each person gets from the same streams, split two ways: the recording and the song. Put in your monthly streams, the cut taken before you’re paid, and everyone’s shares.

Two splits, not one

Every stream pays twice, to two different sets of people.

  • The recording (the master). This money goes to whoever owns the recording: the artist or band, sometimes a label. It comes through your distributor. Band members and producers usually share this one.
  • The song. This goes to the people who wrote it, through collecting societies and publishers. It’s split by your split sheet, and the writers aren’t always the same people as the band.

The song side is smaller. The UK’s competition regulator found publishing rights took about 15% of streaming revenue in 2021, up from 8% in 2008. Most of the rest is split between the recording side and the services. Our guide to music royalties explains where the song money comes from.

Producer points in plain words

A producer “on points” gets a percentage of the artist’s recording royalty. Three points usually means 3% of the recording money, taken off the artist’s share, not added on top.

In the calculator, give the producer a recording share equal to their points and lower the artist’s share to match. If the producer also helped write the song, they get a song share as well.

The cut

Put in whatever is taken before the money reaches you. On a yearly-fee distributor that’s usually 0%. Some free distributors take a percentage. On a record deal, put in 100 minus your royalty rate.

Common questions

How do bands usually split royalties?

There’s no rule. Many bands split the recording equally between members and split the song by who wrote it. Agree it early and write it down.

Are the numbers exact?

No, they’re estimates. Recording money uses what independent artists were paid per 1,000 streams in 2024, from Duetti’s figures. Song money is an estimate before any publisher’s cut. For one artist’s full picture, use the Spotify royalty calculator.

How do I make the split official?

Press “Make it official” in the results. It carries the names and song shares into our split sheet template, ready to print and sign. There’s a filled-in example on that page if you want to see one first. More in our songwriting money guides.

Does the calculator include Spotify’s 1,000-stream minimum?

No. Tracks with fewer than 1,000 Spotify streams in the past 12 months earn no recording royalties there, so very small numbers will come out lower in real life.
